February 21, 2010 Psychodrama Workshop at the Piccolo Theatre at 600 Main Street, Evanston, Illinois.
Come join Lorelei J. Goldman, MA, Trainer, Educator and Group Psychotherapist for a full day of psychodrama.
"Reminescene and Repair is the theme where participants can be involved in their own drama as well as those of others.
We are our stories. By taping into the treasure of our life experiences we will find our true self and enhance our own lives as well as the lives of tohers. This experienceial and didctic workshop explores the theoretical basis and practical applications of life review. Discusion will reflect on how we approach and stimualte memory, enhance self and create a supportive community. IN this workshop, experience how old roles can be transormed and new beginnings made possible.
Participants will leanr the psychological reasons why reminiscene is important and how Psychodrama can be used for repair.
Attendee, will also experience Psychodrama (action techniques) including role playing and role reversal to help those memories come alive. The focus will be on turning points across the life ccycle.

Lorelei J. Goldman, MA, TEP, is the training director of the Psychodrama Training Institute of Chicago. She has been active naitonaly and internationally in teaching the art/science of Psychodrama. She was trained by both Zerka Moreno and Dr. Elaine Sachnoff. She is a fellow and current board member of the American society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrma. She has published in Beyond Behavior and Elementary English journal. She created Poetry in Action as a teaching tool.

CONVERSATIONS IN ACTION-Too often we leave our conversations unfinished, our relationships are sometimes incomplete and our difficulties unresolved. Psychodrama allows us to capture the scenes which have left us stuck, and shows us how to access and express ourselves with new honesty, courage aand compassion. By exploring our true thoughts, needs and feelings, we acheive new perspective and powerful insights, and we actualize our potential for intimacy, creativity and spirituality.

CREATIVE AGING-Creative aging keeps our brains sharp and the expressive arts (psychodrama) can endow our life with special meaning and connectin. A benefit of creativit yis the increased capacity of the human spirit to adapt to changin circumstances. In this workshop we will keep our spontaneity alive in action and role play.

POETRY IN ACTION-I have collected the poetry of clients, students, colleagues, and workshop participants, In this workshop poetry is experienced thru choices and role-play. We then as a collective experience a full classical psychodrama. This is a workshop that Lorelei invented to teach the art of psychodrama. We begin in poetry and end in poetry.

My Sibling, Myself

THE FUTURE IS WHERE WE LIVE-The potential of war, unemployment, global warning and other crisis are around us. This workshop will provide effective strategies of coping skills for personal growth and training. The goals will be new perceptions, insights in the teaching of the art and science of psychodrama.

What is Psychodrama and Who is it For?

Psychodrama is the professional practice of action methods created by the late Dr. Jacob L. Moreno. Psychodrama is a time-tested, clinically-proven method for helping people to achieve personal goals through a process of structured, dramatic improvisation. Psychodrama uses enactment, sociometry, group dynamics, role theory, and social systems analysis to facilitate constructive change in individuals and groups through the development of new perceptions or reorganizations of old cognitive patterns. Psychodrama is not an exclusive process - no specialized training, education, or experience is needed in order to benefit from participating in Psychodrama.

PSYCHODRAMA IS FOR EVERYONE

During a Psychodrama, an individual may explore whatever basic issues or problems he or she wishes and, to that end, will receive the unqualified attention and support of the Psychodrama Director and the other participants in the Psychodrama Group. This individual is called the Protagonist. The Protagonist will co-decide the depth, duration, and extent of the exploration along with the Director, who is the final arbiter. The Protagonist is aided in the enactment of his/her drama by different Psychodrama Techniques put in place by the Director, and by the auxiliary roles played by the other group members.

Instead of talking about problems, the Protagonist is plunged into the midst of his/her emotional reality. It is in the here-and-now that the true power of Psychodrama resides. It is in the here-and-now that we are able to then 'change' some parts of our own realities.

New awareness of old situations or relationships, are encouraged to change existing behavior patterns. Another important aspect is that, because of the spontaneous real enactment, the group develops a life of its own. The intimacy and trust which develop in a Psychodrama Group provide a secure context within which further explorations of interpersonal feelings are possible, and there may be moments when one recognizes the resonance of one's own struggles, pains, and joys within the unfolding drama of someone else.

Charming Cuba, A Professional and Personal Trip

In the darkness of the night, traveling on an old dirt road in an automobile that had ripped leather seats and no form in an unknown town could have been terrifying. The young man, Kessman who became my guide was so informative about where we were going that my fear dissolved . We walked into the starlight night through a passageway with a thin path up three flights of stairs to an old pension type building. The room was small with an adjoining toilet, nineteen fifty style tile floors, and metal closed shutters that I was warned not to look out of because then someone could come into the space. There were four bunk beds with torn mattresses.

The air-conditioning was turned on and I used my own clothing to stay warm. I was not able to reach the air conditioning unit.

This was the International Playback Theatre congress with nine Americans, six German people, and one woman from Chile and many Cubans who were in training with the program in Havana.

On the second day the participants of this congress crawled into a crowded rickety yellow bus on the way to the public plaza for a Playback event. Colorful clowns greeted us on stilts welcoming us to the plaza. It is in this square that I learned about the illustrious El Cabellero de Paris. He was a gentleman who came from Paris to Havana and was accused of stealing and then was put in prison. His madness began to take form there. The statue is in front of the Covento de San Francisco de Assis de la Habana . When this man was released he would go out into the plaza handing out flowers. I do not know of any such hero

Acknowledged in our culture that went mad that had a statue erected in his honor. I heard the next day from a participant of the Congress that the priest of the Sunday morning masses told my story as his sermon for Sunday mass.

The representations of the stories played out in the public squares were universal, the Cuban music poignant and the audiences spellbound.

On the Monday before my departure home I volunteered time and Worked in the medical clinic where I directed Psychodrama with the staff and their patients at the Manila El Monastery y Ayuntamiento Cerro Ciudad Habana, Buba clinic. I felt honored and privileged to be with such a community of charming Cubans. Spending time with the community of those challenged by addiction was an honor. The psychologists seemed to be overworked telling me they sometimes worked thirty hours a day. They wished to know more about the specifics of the method I directed. At the end of our time I was presented with one white orchid and a fresh pineapple. We then went into the office and processed the morning experience.

My translator was the young man who met me at the airport. We worked well together and I slowed down my direction for the purpose of the translation. He spoke a Cuban Spanish. Seemingly different than Caitlin Spanish.

In Cuba confidentiality is not a tenet. So, that if something occurs in a playback experience or at the clinic there is no reference to what we in America mention, “everything in here, stays in here.” This is puzzling and I am not sure how this is translated into the community and the culture.

My last day was spent seeing more of the city. The Malecon, the public squares and a particular special park area. Here, in this small park we completed our adventure. The young Kesman had been reminding me all week that he would take me to see the statue of Lenin. We went to a park area and walked toward a golden statue seated on a park bench. This sculpture seemed to be pulsating and alive. The statue had long hair. In front of the bench were lines from his work. “You may say that I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one, I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will live as one.” I was expecting a bust of Marxist Lenin instead I found the inspiration of our John Lennon.

Perhaps they both were dreamers.
